About me

I'm Sagar Chotalia, an undergraduate student from VJTI, Mumbai and a Robotics enthusiast. My primary interests lie but are not limited to the fields of Robot locomotion (Motion Planning and Path planning), autonomous control of vehicles, SLAM, and designing controls for complex systems.

As an undergraduate, I've done various internships in relevant fields, my most recent one being at the National Aerospace Laboratories, where I worked on the simulator and controls for a fixed-wing glider aircraft. I have also interned at IIT-Bombay and completed Google Summer of Code. Please check out my Resume in the Resume section to know more.

    An exciting Research opportunity

I'm currently performing research under a professor in my university where I'll be researching novel ways of autonomous navigation using Reinforcement Learning.

Resume

Education

  1. Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (V.J.T.I.), Mumbai

    2020 — 2024

Major: Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering (ECE) Cumulative GPA: 8.57/10 Class Rank: 7th

  2. Arya Gurukul International Junior College

    2019 — 2020

    Higher Secondary School(Grade 12): 83.84%

  3. D.A.V. Public School, Airoli

    2012 — 2018

    Grade 10: 95.80%

Research Experience

  1. Research Intern — NAL

    June 2023 — July 2023

Worked in the Flight Mechanics and Control Division at the National Aerospace Laboratories in Bangalore. There, I improved the existing simulator for fixed-wing aircrafts by reducing the redundant objects being compiled. I worked extensively on ArduPilot and built a custom controller for the aircraft in Simulink, which emulated ArduPilot's flow of logic.

  2. Independent Researcher — MoonLab, IISER Bhopal

    February 2023 — April 2023

Conducted literature surveys on various problems and coded a Model Predictive Controller for a wind-velocity based system, with future work to be done.

Experience

  1. Summer Intern — Google Summer of Code

    June 2022 — September 2022

I contributed to OpenAstronomy's sub-organization RADIS, which focussed on making research-grade molecular spectroscopy. RADIS has the fastest line-by-line executable code in this field, and is widely used by scientists. My project was "Memory Tweaks in RADIS", which aimed at tackling some memory bottlenecks in the code as well as making some computations faster to perform. I implemented a feature that reduced the computation time and made large computations accessible on restricted hardware, sometimes accelerating calculations by ~75%.

  2. Summer Intern — IIT Bombay

    June 2022 — July 2022

As a result of my team placing 4th in the e-Yantra Robotics Competition 2021, I was selected for a prestigious and highly selective internship at ERTS Labs, IIT-Bombay. There, I built a nano drone from scratch, sourcing off-the-shelf parts, and built a controller to localise the drone in indoor environments without GPS, making use of an overhead vision system comprising of an inexpensive camera and a software known as WhyCon. I also implemented features like waypoint navigation and position holding in this project, making use of the well-known PID controller.

My skills

  • Languages

    Python, C, C++, MATLAB
  • Libraries

  • OpenCV, NumPy, Pandas, MatPlotLib
  • Frameworks

  • ROS
  • Developer Tools

  • Linux, Git, bash
  • Simulators
